Collecting vintage tablecloths with whimsical themes is one of my favorite pastimes. I have a personal collection of over 100 whimsical children, gardening and housewife tablecloths. The "children" themes are my favorite. These sweet little figures seem to dance around the tablecloth, one can't help but to be captivated and charmed by the darling graphics of these cute pieces of ktichen history. The whimsical theme tablecloths were popular in the late 1930's when America was in the middle of the "Great Depression" and looked for a release from the harsh realities of daily life. Unfortunately, this is also the time when the dyes that were being used by the manufacturers were not of the highest quality - so you'll find these tablecloths usually faded from use.

One manufacturer had a collection of "Children Around the World" themes. I have collected 3 of the 4 patterns I believe were produced. As with all vintage tablecloth patterns, they came in different colors schemes and were made of different materials. Included in the collection are: "Mexican Children" "American Children" and "Russian Children". I have also seen "Scandinavian Children" but haven't acquired it as yet for my collection. Variations of this theme of sweet, whimsical faces can also be found in a series of "Adult" figures in a "Sweethearts" , "Housewife" and "Butler and Maid" themes. I believe these to be all from the same manufacturer "JS&S" who produced tablecloth lines in the late 1930's to the late 1950's.
